![]() While reading this the image that Steinbeck gave of Cathy coming up the steps of the Trask house came to mind. In the Bible, God says to Cain ".sin is crouching at your door it desires to have you, but you must master it". He is the opposite of God, like Steinbeck said that "Adam's father Cyrus was something of the devil".Īnother similarity to the story of Cain and Abel in the Bible is Cathy. Here I also think that here you see that Cyrus is not a godly figure at all. ![]() In the book, Adam's gift was not out of faith or care for his father, becuase you find out that he didn't love his father at all, yet Charles' gift was out of love and thought. God favored Abel's offering more because it showed thought and faith in God, unlike Cain's which was thoughtless and careless. However, here is where these two stories differ. When you look at how the gifts were received, Adam's gift was appreciated more than Charles, just like Abel's was more favored by God than Cain's gift was. If you look at Adam's gift to Cyrus, it was a puppy. ![]() His gift to God was the first born of his flock. Cain's gift to God was some of his fruits that he had grown. In the Bible it says that Cain "worked the soil", which is a lot like Charles becasue Charles is very passionate about farming. ![]() They have some resemblance to gifts that Cain and Abel gave to God. What caught my attention first was the gifts that were given to Adam's and Charles' father. Even though I am assuming that the "Cain" and the "Abel" of the book have not been introduced yet, I have already seen parallels to the story of Cain and Abel to the story of Charles and Adam in Part One. ![]()
